Gonna swap out the humbuckers in my Al 3100 Root Beer to a black open coil or a zebra open coil. Thought about Duncan Jazz/ JB or 59/JB combo. Play (try to at least) classic rock to hard rock. Looking for other options as well. Any suggestions?

The Enwistle HV-58 comes in an uncovered zebra version. All of us that have an Olson like these. I like your ideal of the 59/JB combo myself.

I also really like the SD pearly gates p/u for classic rock/metal to newer hard rock.

Keep us updated on what you decide.

I have a Fender Tele HH with a 59 in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the bridge. I love the sound of that one, but the body is basswood and thinner, so it doesn't resonate like the AL 3100 would. Can we buy the Entwhistles from Robert or somewhere else?

I believe that Robert can get them for you... When I was pricing pickups for the now defunct jazzmaster project I was able to email Alan Enwistle directly you might be able to get them direct or he would tell you who to go to.

Robert may give you a good deal though he says members of this forum get some sort of discount.

I'd probably go with the JB/'59 combo myself. Alnico is definitely my magnet of choice for its sweet fatness, and the JB is one of the hottest Alnico pickups you can get...

One other thing you could do is swap out the magnets on the current pups for AlNiCo II's

I think I am gonna go the 59/ JB route. I need to upgrade the pots too. Any good sources out there?

apparently there is a debate about whats the best after market POTs for les pauls.

The two front runners seem to be Alpha and CTS pots

These can be gotten at the following places:

http://www.guitarelectronics.com/category/electronic_parts.pots/

http://www.guitarnucleus.com/gnstore/elec_pots.html

http://www.guitarfetish.com/Guitar-Electrical-Components_c_14.html

Guitar fetish seems to have the best prices but they only carry Alpha.

While your at it you might as well upgrade your CAP to one of the 'orange drop' caps at Guitar fetish -I've heard nothing but good things.

If you don't want to drill out the pot holes to American size, you will of course need metric pots. I bring this up because I want to eventually rewire my Olson LP and install push-pull pots, and what I found was that Alpha were the only metric ones available with that feature, if you're looking to do anything like that.

RS Guitar Works is the place I would suggest for changing out the pots and input jack, as well with the pickup switch.THey have all you need.
Just look at the selection chart.

I bought one of the kits for my Greco SG, the parts are top of the line.
The switch and input jack are made by Switch Kraft. The best place..

For pickups, check the SinBuckers, low cost, made by a very cool cat!
who winds them by hand. He will work with you on what you are hearing in your head. His price is very low $50.00 for custom humbucker made to your liking! His email is soundsofsin@hotmail.com
