Ever notice how sometimes when you listen to music you haven't heard for awhile, new elements of the music grab your ear and you wonder why you didn't hear it all those times before? I've got early KISS playing right now and I'm hearing all sorts of new stuff. Their songs really had a lot of cool things going on structurally, and the guitar harmonies are far more prevalent than I used to realize.

So I'll start off tipping my hat to Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley, two great '70s guitar heroes! This pic is from the May 18, 1976 KISS show in Mannheim, Germany. Since this is early KISS, Ace is playing his 2 pickup LP Standard rather than the 3 pickup Custom he's usually associated with, and Paul has his Gibby Flying V rather than the ubiquitous Ibanez Iceman...

Glen Buxton - Alice Cooper band
Uli John Roth - Scorpions
EVH - Van Halen (just barely in the 70's)
Scott Gorham - Thin Lizzy
Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple

And of course who can for get Frank Zappa

Few of the many...So many great players came from that era.

I wish this list included the next decade so I could include John Sykes as well.

While he spans several decades, I think his best stuff was in the 70's- Pete Townsend.

While I have a lot of favorites from the 70's, the late great Paul Kossoff of Free stands out because of his sick vibrato and even sicker tone.

Great list here and +1 on Kossoff !
But I can't let it go any further without mention of Plant, Beck, Clapton or Gilmour! These guys shaped my playing more than anyone else from this decade.

I would also like to add Tommy Bolin. His playing on Billy Cobhams Spectrum is on fire!
