Just wondering if we have any other fans of Opeth here on the forum. I've been a fan for a few years and they always amaze me with their musicianship and song structures. I don't really like straight-ahead death or black metal; it's just too one-dimensional for me, but Opeth is light years ahead of those genres. I've never heard any other metal band that sounds anything like them.

I've seen lists of Mikael Åkerfeldt's (lead guitar and vocals) gear - lots of PRS's - but never saw any mention of what pickups he uses. It seems like he doesn't use any mega output stuff like Blackouts or anything, especially not from this picture. Anybody know?

The first time I heard them was in an acoustic track included with God of War 3 Rolling Eyes I actually enjoyed it a lot and have been trying to listen to them, but I have exams...

I dig tech metal myself, Opeth included. Still Life is a great album. You're right. The level of musicianship required to pull of those arrangements is high indeed. If you like Opeth, check out Meshuggah, Cynic, Enslaved, and Athiest. The music is fast, complex, and of course very heavy.
