My wife and I have been discussing the idea of moving. We really hate Arizona and have ever since we moved here. We are only here because my parents live here and I am their only child, and I wanted to be closer to them. Lately, however, as you've probably heard, the state which already has nothing to be proud of has chosen to further shame itself by legalizing racial profiling (the reason why my profile location now says Arizona - The Fourth Reich). The state economy already is one of the worst in the nation and is sure to get worse if the law actually goes into effect next month. There have been a flood of businesses and private parties who have chosen to boycott and/or leave Arizona on account of it. My wife is a legal immigrant from Mexico, and she is appalled at the Maricopa county sheriff's Gestapo culture of fear and intimidation that has been festering here, and has just come to a head with the blessing of the state government. We just want to leave this place behind to rot in its stupidity.
Having gotten that off my chest - and I don't like to get political, but when there is a law specifically made to discriminate against my wife, son, and friends, it really pisses me off - we've been pondering where to go.
We've got a few options so far. We could always return to Milwaukee, WI where we came from. Both of us have family and friends there, and it would be nice to see all our old haunts again. But on the other hand, it would be nice to go somewhere different, a place of our own choosing. Arizona was more or less chosen for us, and it never has and never will be a good fit. Too dirty, dead, and (to us) ugly.
We are also looking at Central/South Florida. The Puerto Rican/Cuban culture down there is very appealing to us as we have many friends from the islands, and we both are fluent in Spanish (obviously). The Miami area sounds very nice, although it's on the coast and those pesky hurricanes don't sound like fun. The other option would be the Orlando area which is centered in the state and doesn't get the full dose of nature's fury. We visited both cities a few years ago on vacation and we liked them. Clean, green, and inviting was our impression.
Do you guys have any suggestions on some other nice places to look at? We want to choose our destination wisely this time - moving's not cheap - and be happy with our choice, so we're open to suggestions. _________________ ᛊᛈᚨᚱᚨ ᛟᚲᚢᚱ ᚠᚱᚨ ᚦᛖ ᛟᚠᛊᚨᛒᚱᛇᛞᛁ ᚨᚠ ᚦᛖ ᚾᛟᚱᚦᚢᚱ |

Orlando sounds like a good positive move! or you can move to Seattle and enjoy all the rainy days, heavy traffic and you will never have to search for a coffee stand, since they are on every corner of the streets..

Its hard to say - You make a great case for moving to Florida.
I speak a little bit of Spanish and understand enough to know when people are talking about me. I do enjoy many of the Latin cultures too so I can see why Florida would be an appealing choice.
Even though I live here myself, I can't endorse California except that we do have a lot of stuff to do out here- Also the area's around Sacramento aren't too bad, but our state economy is completely screwed up at the moment.
If I were to leave from here my choices would be:
Southern Oregon (Medford/Ashland area or any where along the Oregon coast)
Austin, Texas or surrounding area _________________ When someone asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" I'm keeping my mouth shut on this, it will just get me into trouble. Cali's nice to visit, but not to live, IMO; I have lived there, it is expensive. _________________ Gear:

Touché sir... I know the law really polarizes people and I do understand the motivation behind it; however, I would like to see a solution that would be fair to everyone and make it easier for law-abiding people seeking a better life to enter the country legally. The bureaucratic red tape and agonizing wait (8-10 years!) one has to go through is absolutely ridiculous. I just think it's too bad that the federal government has sat idle on the whole thing for so long. Now we are going to have laws passed in desperation at the state level which will end up robbing legal residents and US-born Hispanics of a certain degree of peace of mind, wondering if today is the day they get pulled over on some BS thing like not signaling to turn, and hear, "Papers please"! When it's your wife or your close friends who could be next to hear that, it changes your perspective...
I just think there must be a better way... otherwise, then, everyone should get asked for papers when they get pulled over, since illegal immigrants and expired visas can be found in every race and nationality if you get right down to it.
No hard feelings toward anyone who disagrees, and I don't want this to get ugly, so that's all I will say about this. I love you guys _________________ ᛊᛈᚨᚱᚨ ᛟᚲᚢᚱ ᚠᚱᚨ ᚦᛖ ᛟᚠᛊᚨᛒᚱᛇᛞᛁ ᚨᚠ ᚦᛖ ᚾᛟᚱᚦᚢᚱ |

All joking aside on my part about Seattle. If I were to move, I would place quality of life first, since I have a daughter. The place would have to have a good home schooling program ( since my wife and I home school our daughter ) second would be crime rate, and third is how well is the job market.
We have toyed with the idea of moving to Texas, since my wife's sister lives near Austin. Yet, my job pays to good for us to up root at this time.
So I guess, I would say, move some where near or not too far from close family and friends. Its alsways good to have support by you in times of need.
You have a lot of soul searching my friend, now that you are a proud papa! |
