Just wondering what you guys like to do the chill out (literally) in summer. I like to pop over to Mom and Dad's house and jump in the pool and then have a few icy cold ones at the ready. At home, though, this is what I do:

In Arizona where I ended up thanks to the fickle finger of fate, when the air is dry like it is now, you don't have to run A/C. You can use an evaporative cooler a.k.a. swamp cooler. They use a fraction of the electricity and a small amount of water. They actually get the air pretty darn chilly, as much as 30 degrees lower than the outside air. The plus side for guitarists is thanks to the added humidity they provide, they're great for acoustic guitars and I don't even need a case humidifier! They only problem is that during the "monsoon" season when the humidity is high, they don't do squat. I'll have to get a window A/C in a month or so, but in the meantime I'll enjoy the nice, cool, moist air from the cooler.

In So Cal - the low desert portion a few hundred miles west on the I-10 from you- I just have a couple window a/c units that run almost continuously during the summer. - plus an assortment of fans.

If I can find a friend with a pool I'll usually do that or on occasion I'll head down to the beach (hour drive or so there about 3 hour drive back...damn california traffic). If its 115 here in San Berdo its only 85 at the water. If the beach isnt an option I go an hour north to Big Bear lake. In the higher elevation you trade the heat for humidity but its still comfortable.

^^^We have family in Mission Viejo, CA and sometimes we head out there for the weekend and go down to Newport Beach. Prior to meeting my wife, I had never seen or touched the ocean. That was the first place I did it, and it's pretty nice down there. The Rockin' Baja Lobster is a nice place to chow down out there.

Back home in Milwaukee we have the lakefront of Lake Michigan. During the July/August heat wave, if you get within a couple miles of the lake it gets so nice and cool and all you want to do is kick back in the shade with some icy cold Millers (the pride of Milwaukee Very Happy )

Before I moved to AZ I lived in San Diego close to SDSU, and Craig you are right the Rockin' Baja Lobster is a great place to chow down. To beat the heat out here in AZ I have a pool which I go in at least once a day in the summer.

I'm in St. Louis, so the summers are very hot and humid. NO real cure for the humidity, feels like walking in glue.

Never heard that analogy before but it's a good one Laughing In Milwaukee it's like that sometimes; we used to say you could cut the humidity with a knife. When I was a kid, before we got A/C in the late '80s, when the nights got too hot to sleep we'd head down to the basement, fold out the sleeper sofa, and run the dehumidifier. I always looked forward to that; it was a treat. Very cool - literally. Best sleep I ever got as a kid Very Happy

We also have mosquitos up the wazoo back home, so much so that we refer to them as the Wisconsin state bird Laughing

We moved around a lot as a kid, but always ended up back in St. Louis. After a move from Seattle back to here, I thought I was sweat away or melt. It is God's country up there.
