I personally think it's better to use multi-track recording software like Sonar or ACID Pro because their interfaces are much like a hardware mixing board, plus you can use plugin effects with them. If you can afford it, Pro Tools is what the big boys use, but you have to buy an additional piece of hardware to use the software. On the other end of the spectrum, if finances are a consideration, Audacity is a good free multi-track program that's available. _________________ Fender| Mighty Mite| GFS| Epiphone| Yamaha| Ventura| Laguna| RM Olson

You can just mic and go how ever expect the quality to be very low.
Its best to get a hold of a digital audio interface - these range in price from 70 dollars into the thousands. I have a few that pretty much cover that range...I have my Line 6 tone port ux-2 and a MOTU 896 firewire interface.
The line 6 is great because it comes with its "Gear Box" software (amp & effects modeling) as well as Abelton Live (lite) recording software. For about 100 dollars I got a decent hardware interface and all the software I need to get started recording.
Abelton Live is good, but I've moved up to Cubase recording software - Like Jimidom mentioned if your looking for a great free option audacity is the way to go.
If you want a cleaner sounding recording -something you would use for demos and the like - I would suggest picking up a used usb interface off craigslist and downloading Audacity. _________________ When someone asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?"
