As some of you guys may know I own an older Hondo II LP copy and I am pretty much always doing something to it. This time I am thinking of refinishing it, and I wanted to know your opinions on the color to finish it. The choices I've been thinking of are a Heritage cherry like stain with a satin clear over it, the next would be a brown stain like a walnut color with the same satin clear, an the last would be leaving it natural with the satin clear. One thing to note is that the body is plywood, and the plys are two different woods one is mahogany and the other is a maple colored one, but I don't know what the actual wood is. _________________ Gear:

I say other: go for a desert burst. It's one of the best finishes I've seen:

If I could get a hold of a flame maple vener for cheap, I might do that and then tint the clear coat each time I apply a layer. I'll have to see how much money I have by January to do that though, money's real tight right now. _________________ Gear:

The striping on the desert burst makes it like a work of art.
I've been looking a lot at pearl and candy color paints or solid colors that are specific to cars. _________________ When someone asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" I'm curious to know as well. _________________ When someone asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."~ Jack Burton |

I think I am going to go with the cherry stain, with a satin clearcoat on the neck but with a glossy finsh on the body and headstock. The reason I decided on the cherry is because I love the color on SGs and I think it'll look good on the Hondo too, plus it would be easier than the desert burst and as cool as it looks, I'm new to refinishing guitars so the degree of difficulty is a factor. Now the hard part, saving up the money to make it happen. _________________ Gear:

That desert burst is indeed sexy. I might be doing it to one of Robert's PRS kits...if the woman allows me to buy one.
As for the cherry finish, go for it, I bet it'll look awesome. I'm more of a fan of the aged one vs the new cherry. _________________ Newest addition: RMO ES-335 Custom Build

Can you get the Desert Burst finish right? If so, we need to talk about an SG I'm looking at. I would attempt the build part, but the finish part...mot so much. _________________ Guitars- Agile AL3100 CSB, 3100 Root Beer Wide, Schecter PT Fastback 3TS, Schecter C1-XXX

Sadly, I won't be getting a kit I've come across a HUGE deal (read: $300 below normal price) for some audiophile speakers for my stereo that I couldn't pass up. Add that to the Tele and Jazzmaster from Tony, and I am borderline in the dog house. Luckily the woman is travelling this week, so it'll be too late to say no to the speakers _________________ Newest addition: RMO ES-335 Custom Build

I'm in sell down mode too. Gonna cull out about half of what I own, then upgrade a couple. I would like to get a Desert Burst SG though. We'll see I guess. _________________ Guitars- Agile AL3100 CSB, 3100 Root Beer Wide, Schecter PT Fastback 3TS, Schecter C1-XXX

I'm hoping to be able to take off the original finish some time this Thanksgiving weekend, but I won't be able to paint it until sometime around Christmas. I have one question though, how do I remove the sleeves for the bridge that are set into the body? _________________ Gear:

Get a longer bolt of the same size/thread pitch and screw it in. It should begin to pull the insert out of the body as you crank it down. Since it doesn't have a point on it like a screw, it should not drive itself into the body wood. _________________ ᛊᛈᚨᚱᚨ ᛟᚲᚢᚱ ᚠᚱᚨ ᚦᛖ ᛟᚠᛊᚨᛒᚱᛇᛞᛁ ᚨᚠ ᚦᛖ ᚾᛟᚱᚦᚢᚱ |
